Afon Wen is a wonderfully tranquil woodland located in the north west of Wales 1.6 miles from the nearest village of Llangybi. You can see the location and directions here. (Please register before visiting)

The site has almost no passing traffic and is located on the National Welsh Mountain bike trail. Although the site enjoys this peaceful setting Criccieth (6.8m south by road), Pwllheli (7.8m south) and Caernarfon (14m north) are all within easy reach. The Snowdonia National Park is also close by and some of the woodland sections offer wonderful views of the mountains, including Snowdon.

This is a fantastic base from which to explore North Wales and all it has to offer.

DESCRIPTION

Situated in the SW corner of the Afon Wen south site, this wood extends to approximately 4.1 acres (1.66 hectares). Currently nicknamed “Enchanted” wood due to an area of unusual windblown trees that have continued to develop and grow very successfully on one side, giving a fairytale appearance.

The Llangybi to Bryncir back road borders “Enchanted” wood on its western side, and although this gives excellent and easy access to the wood, is an extremely quiet road that does not affect the peace and tranquillity on offer.

“Enchanted” wood is entered just inside the main, secure gates to the Afon Wen south site and over a small spring-fed stream that runs through the NW corner of this wood. The Southern edge of the wood offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, which extend all the way to the waters of Cardigan Bay.

The western side of this wood is reasonably open, and offers plenty of scope for enjoyment, while the eastern side is far denser in growth and has many unexplored areas ready to be discovered.

There are currently two cleared areas that have very easy access and would be suitable for parking, camping or caravanning.

South Wood 2

Situated in the SE corner of the Afon Wen south site, wood 2 extends to approximately 6.1 acres (2.47 hectares). This wood has a number of interesting and excellent features and is also the largest wood for sale at the south site.

DESCRIPTION

Wood 2 is entered via the main secure gates to the Afon Wen south site and along the main access ride eastwards approximately 100m. An area has been cleared and is suitable for parking, caravanning and camping in the NW corner of the wood.

The southern edge of the wood has outstanding views of the surrounding countryside extending all the way down to the waters of Cardigan Bay. The eastern edge is bordered by the small Afon Wen River which contains small trout and also offers wonderful views of the Snowdonia National Park and on a clear day Snowdon itself.

A very private picnic area has been cleared next to the river and this area would also be suitable for camping, although access is currently only on foot.

This wood is highest on its western boundary with wood 1 and slopes gently in the middle down to the river in the east. This large plot has lots of ‘as yet’ unexplored areas, provisional surveys have suggested that there are plenty of clearings and glades on the lower level and next to the river that could be explored and developed further to suit the owners’ needs.

Situated in a central eastern position within the Afon Wen south site, Wood 3 extends to approximately 3.0 acres (1.21 hectares).

DESCRIPTION

Wood 3 is entered via the main secure gates to the Afon Wen south site and along the main access ride eastwards approximately 120m. An area has been cleared and is suitable for parking, caravanning and camping in the SW corner of the wood, although there may be an opportunity to extend the ride to the north and further into the wood.

The wood is fairly open to the west and slopes gently away towards the small Afon Wen River, which currently contains small trout.

A short walk down from the parking area is a seasonally occurring pond, and that path leads further to a very secluded picnic area next to the Afon Wen River. This area would also be suitable for camping although access is currently only on foot.

From the river, there are some lovely views of the beautiful surrounding countryside extending towards the Snowdonia National Park. The river runs the whole eastern edge of this wood and offers some wonderful opportunities for peace, tranquillity and leisure pursuits.

Situated towards the NE corner of the Afon Wen south site, Wood 4 extends to approximately 2.3 acres (0.93 hectares).

DESCRIPTION

Access to this wood is via the main secure gates to the Afon Wen south site and along the secondary ride through Plot 6. There are many areas that would be suitable for camping and the wood comes complete with a cleared area suitable for parking, camping and caravans.

This wood boasts direct access to the small Afon Wen River, which currently supports small trout along the entire length of its eastern boundary and all of the associated opportunities. This wood also contains the largest tree currently standing in the whole of the south wood site, and that tree is located in a very picturesque spot next to the river. Currently, there are several locations along the riverbank that would make peaceful, tranquil and private picnic areas. South Wood 5

Situated in the NE corner of the Afon Wen south site, Wood 5 extends to approximately 3.4 acres (1.38 hectares).

DESCRIPTION

Bordered on its northern and western edge by the very quiet B352 the wood boasts the wonderful traditional Welsh stone feature bridge in its NE corner. It has approximately 30m of direct access on some of its eastern boundary to the small Afon Wen River, which currently supports small trout.

Wood 5 is a predominantly flat and very gently sloping wood, accessed by either its own secure gateway direct from the B352 or via the main secure gates to the Afon Wen South Wood site and along the secondary ride through Plot 6.

This route is suitable for larger vehicles or those towing but please note; without further development, the gate direct from the road into Wood 5 is currently only suitable for cars due to the tight turning circle.

Wood 5 is a very private wood, not overlooked with excellent tree coverage; it is a light and airy wood that provides many opportunities for additional camping and picnic areas.
